1 in 3 Drivers Cut Corners on Car Maintenance and Repairs
According to a recent survey by the Post Office, almost a third of UK car owners are delaying servicing their cars to save money. With 1 in 3 trying to reduce the running costs of car ownership, they are putting themselves and other road users in danger.
Drivers in their 20's are more likely to skip a service with almost half of them saying they have missed routine checks in order to save money. Drivers in the North West are more likely to miss a service than in other regions with 39% saying they have postponed a service due to being short on cash.
More and more drivers are resorting to picking up a tool kit and repairing their vehicles themselves and women (13%) being more likely than men (7%) to ask for help from friends and family. Only 5% of woman compared to 17% of men will take on the task of repairing the car themselves.
Paul Havenhand, Head of Insurance at the Post Office says: "Ignoring a small problem which could be easily repaired will not make it disappear, and could result in the cost escalating with time. Failing to maintain your car could lead to it being deemed un-roadworthy. Even more importantly, it could make the car dangerous on the roads and put both the driver and others at risk."
Even though owners are advised to have their car serviced once a year, or on average between 10,000 - 12,000miles, a staggering 15% never bother to have their car serviced each year.
Paul Havenhand says: "Our analysis found that road accidents are down on ten years ago, but this shouldn't mean that drivers are complacent on safety and should ensure their vehicles are in good condition before heading out on the roads."
