Give your tyres a health check

Published: Monday 13th of May 2013 | Author: Katie | Category: Tyres

Just like we do our cars need a regular health check. With the warm weather finally sneaking in you might be planning a weekend away, which means your car needs to be in tip top condition to avoid the breakdown blues.

Tyres are one of the most important checks you should complete before a long journey – because believe me a tyre blow out is more likely to end in holiday hell than the breakdown blues. “Your brakes and steering will be adversely affected by under-inflated or over-inflated tyres”, according to, meaning your actually putting yourself as risk by not getting your tyres checked regularly.  If you’re not sure what the legal requirements are contact one of Concorde Auto Centre’s trained technicians.

It’s a known fact that it’s virtually impossible to ‘pack light’ when going away which brings risks of its own. Research by tyre firm Bridgestone has revealed that 78% of motors in Britain are running on under-inflated tyres, with Andy Dingley, manager at Bridgestone, revealing: “The figures from our survey offer some cause for concern, especially at this time of year when families are preparing to set off on long journeys with heavily loaded cars”.

A top tip to remember when checking your tyres is to wait until your tyres are cold as warm or hot tyres might give a misleading reading. report that “By keeping your tyres at their optimum pressure your running costs are also reduced. Under-inflated tyres require a bigger force to make them turn, so your car uses more fuel. Additionally, tyres which are not set to their correct pressure wear out more quickly”.

Last year the AA reported that it dealt with 57,000 tyre-related call outs during the summer, making tyres the most common problem for its staff to fix.  The good news is, however, that many tyre-related incidents can actually be avoided by carrying out a few simple checks.

“Before setting off, the tyre inspections should include checking the air, condition and tread.”(
