Top 5 Reasons Why Your Car's Tyres Need Attention

Published: Thursday 7th of March 2013 | Author: Scott | Category: Tyres

The tyres on your car are probably the most important part of your car, effecting road handling, acceleration and braking through to a comfortable ride for the driver and passengers. With that in mind you need to give your tyres the attention they deserve.

We all seem to forget about our tyres when in fact we should be giving them more respect than most other parts on your car. The trouble is we just don't think about the condition of our tyres until it's too late. When was the last time you checked the pressure of your tyres, or checked the depth of the tread? Maybe it's time we spent more time maintaining our tyres as these Top 5 reasons shown why car tyres fail.

They're Old - Although tyres don't come with an expiration date, they do come marked with a date that the tyre was manufactured. It's always a good idea not to have tyres fitted to your car if they have been sitting in a warehouse gathering dust for years! A general rule of thumb is not to purchase a tyre more than 5 years old.

Under Inflation - Did you know that a tyre that's underinflated actually runs at a hotter temperature that one that is correctly inflated? The underinflated tyre allows the sidewalls to flex more than they should do and it is this flexing that generates the heat which accelerates the degradation of the core structure of the tyre. You can't judge if a tyre is inflated correctly by just looking at it! Invest in a pressure gauge and regularly check them. Your cars manual will give you details for the correct pressure for the tyres.

Over Inflation - Just as underinflated tyres are bad, so too is over inflation. Over inflated tyres cause the tyre to bulge and this not only reduced the contact patch on the road leading to poor grip, but it will also lead to the centre of the tyre tread wearing prematurely.

They've Deteriorated - Tyres degradation can be speeded up by the ozone, road chemicals and ultraviolet light degrading the rubber. However, this is probably more of a problem for mobile homes or trailers that is left outside in the sun all year round. Tyres are permeated with oils that are designed to leach out slowly and protect the rubber. However some aftermarket cleaning detergents may remove these oils prematurely. A certain amount of wear and tear is OK on the tyre and if you see little cracks in the sidewalls that's normal but if the cracks are down to the fabric sidewall plies, I think it's time you got them replaced.

Damaged Tyres - Any sharp objects that have penetrated the tyre far enough to cause a leak, no matter how slow the leak, is reason enough to have the tyre removed from the wheel and inspected by a qualified auto technician for damage to the inside of the tyre. Stay clear of temporally external patches. A tyre should be repaired from the inside, and damage to tyre walls tends not to be possible to repair.
