Top Tips to Help Your Vehicle Pass its MOT

Published: Wednesday 27th of February 2013 | Author: Scott | Category: MOT

We've all been there, we get the letter in the post to remind us that our car is due an MOT and we all begin worrying if the car is going to pass or not! As long as you keep the vehicle serviced regularly you shouldn't have too much to worry about.

It's always a good idea to arrange your car to have a service at the same time as your MOT test to ensure it passes without any major hiccups. For those with a car that's approaching 3 years from new, this is the time you'll be required to have the vehicle put through its first MOT. With that in mind it is always worthwhile having the vehicle serviced a few weeks in advance of the MOT just in case there is any additional work required which can be covered by the manufacturer's warranty.

On top of this, there are some simple checks you can do yourself before booking a MOT which will help resolve any issues before they become a problem.

Check your tyres tread and pressure

The legal limit for tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across 75% of the tyres width and around the whole tyre. A quick and simple test is to get a 20 pence piece and place the coin into the tread. If you can't see the outer-band of the 20p coin then the tread is fine. If that outer-band is showing then your tyre is illegal and you will not pass the MOT. Check also your tyre pressures, correct inflation values can be found in your car's handbook.

Check your lights are working

Quick and simple this one, switch on all the lights and check that they are working and that there are no blown bulbs. Get a friend to help you when you press the brake pedal to ensure your break lights work, and also your main beams work also on your headlights.

Check your windscreen for cracks and chips

Check for chips and cracks and ensure that the driver's side does not have any cracks larger than 10mm as this may cause you to fail your MOT. It's also worth checking the wiper blades to make sure they clear the windscreen correctly when in use. If worn or damaged, we would recommend that you get them replaced for the MOT test.

Check your brakes

Does your car pull to the left or right under braking? This will fail on the MOT test. Also ensure that the brake pedal feels firm when you apply the brakes and is not soft. Check the brake fluid reservoir under the bonnet too, ensuring that the fluid is between the minimum and maximum marks. Finally check the handbrake moves freely and that it holds the vehicle on a hill, preventing it from moving.

Check your exhaust is not blowing

Simply start the vehicle and place a rag over the end of the tailpipe. You should then be able to hear for leaks or blowing. Ensure that the exhaust is firmly held in place on the car and that none of the brackets have become loose or badly rusted.

Check your number plates

Personalised number plates may look cool, but if numbers and letters have been moved about to spell words or names, this will fail on the MOT as it is illegal to alter number plates in this way. You should also check for cracks or broken plates or if they are not fixed surely to the car as this will also cause the car to fail the MOT test.

These are just some of the quick and easy checks you can make to your car to ensure it passes the MOT test without any major problems. If having checked any of the above has highlighted any concerns, then we would recommend you get the car booked into Concorde Auto Centre for our expert technicians to check over the car and provide you with a report of any problem areas that may require attention before the MOT.
