Your guide to cambelt replacement

Published: Wednesday 14th of January 2015 | Author: Holly | Category: Cambelts

When it comes to servicing your vehicle, one of the most important components to ensure if in top condition is your car’s cambelt.

The cambelt’s main job is controlling the camshafts in the engine and keeps it running smoothly. Knowing the signs for when it needs to be replaced can save you hundreds of pounds and save your car’s engine from severe damage.

A snapped cambelt means your engine will cease to function causing damage to the valves, lifters, pushrods, pistons, and as most oil pumps run on this belt oil starvation can cause bearing damage – in other words total engine just for a belt. So not changing your cambelt will be a false economy.

When should I replace my cambelt?

The owner's manual maintenance schedule is the source of timing belt replacement intervals, typically every 60,000 to 70,000 miles.

Signs that your cambelt may need changing

Signs of a worn cambelt will include a high pitched sound especially apparent when the car starts up. Visual signs include spots of oil or coolant and the belts teeth will be worn and some perhaps missing altogether.

Is it expensive to change a cambelt?

No – at Concorde we can fit from as little as £79.95. It is always best to get it changed before something goes wrong as a snapped belt will be considerably more!
